More and more elderly people want to remain in their own homes and communities, where they have lived for decades, instead of moving into a nursing home. However, they also do not want to live in loneliness. This trend has led to an increased demand for services and technology specifically tailored to the needs of older people. In addition to emergency call bracelets that provide the necessary safety at home, senior companion services also help older people experience their usual daily life and serve as practical support, naturally also to counteract loneliness. The main goal is to enable older people to live an independent and fulfilling life in their familiar surroundings. This includes services such as help with shopping, doctor's appointments, help with technology and household tasks up to social activities that prevent lonely days.
One of the most remarkable aspects of senior companion services is the promotion of social interaction. Loneliness and social isolation are common problems among older people, which can negatively affect mental health. For many older people, everyday activities and tasks can become a burden. But new tasks, such as modern technology, also become a challenge. This is where senior companion services come in, offering a supportive hand while promoting social interaction and the well-being of older people.
The Benefits of Senior Companion Services:
· Independence: Older people can remain in their familiar surroundings and still receive the support they need to live an independent life.
· Improved Quality of Life: By assisting with daily tasks and promoting social activities, seniors can improve their quality of life and counteract loneliness.
· Relief for Families: Often, family members are the ones caring for older people. Senior companion services can relieve these families and ensure a balanced division of labor.
· Prevention of Isolation: The social interaction facilitated by senior companion services helps to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
Interview with a Senior Companion
We sat down with the Lippstadt Senior Companion Service to learn more about the processes and challenges of senior companion services and dealing with older people.
Thank you for this interview today. Could you please introduce yourselves and tell us how you came to the Lippstadt Senior Companion Service?
We are the honorary coordinators Theodor Kremer and Klaus Rennkamp from the Lippstadt Visiting and Companion Service (BBD) for older people in Lippstadt. We became aware of this proposed project through the Office for Civic Engagement of the City of Lippstadt and then progressively developed it further. We are supported in this by Ms. Sylvia Helmig from this office.
What services are included in the Lippstadt Senior Companion Service?
The BBD aims to spend time with the often lonely, older people through its volunteer staff. Many activities are conceivable, such as usually home visits, conversation and listening, board games, reading aloud, leisure activities e.g. short walks, accompaniment to cultural events,...
General services of senior companion services are as follows:
1. Transport and accompaniment: Many older people have difficulties with mobility and can no longer travel as easily as before. Senior companion services offer transport to doctor's appointments, shopping trips or cultural events.
2. Company and social activities: Loneliness can become a serious problem in old age. Senior companion services offer company and organize activities such as walks, board games and cultural outings to promote social interaction.
3. Help with housework: Everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning and laundry can become strenuous in old age. Senior companion services can help with these tasks to enable older people to have a comfortable and tidy home.
4. Shopping support: Grocery shopping or going to the pharmacy can become a tedious task for older people. Senior companion services can help with shopping or even take over the errands.
5. Reminder services: An important aspect in old age is medication intake and keeping appointments. Senior companion services can remind of important appointments and ensure that medication is taken correctly.
Are there enough volunteer helpers or are you always looking for support?
Currently, we have about 25 predominantly female volunteers. But there can certainly be more!
What inspired you to specialize in supporting older people?
Our society is becoming increasingly anonymous, and many people only think of themselves. We want to arouse interest in helping older people in their often lonely life situation.
How do your services adapt to the individual needs and preferences of seniors?
Each of our helpers has agreed on an individual plan with the seniors.
What types of activities and excursions do you offer to promote social interaction and entertainment for seniors?
Our seniors receive further offers through the Office for Civic Engagement and the Senior Citizens' Office of the City of Lippstadt, e.g., senior cinema, senior café, "Latschen und Tratschen" (strolling and chatting), mobile shopping cart, help with bus journeys through the group of volunteer bus escorts and independent care advice.
Don't hesitate to pick up the phone. Sometimes there are more solutions than you think.
How important is emotional support in caring for older people, and how do you integrate this aspect into your services?
Emotional support is the most important point for us in the BBD. The person should be at the center of attention.
How do you ensure that companions are empathetic, qualified, and well-matched to the needs of seniors?
We offer our companions, who should bring a certain empathy and healthy self-confidence from the start, further training, e.g., dealing with dementia, first aid, acoustics, regular feedback events, ..
Is there a particular event that you or the caregivers remember?
That genuine friendships have developed between seniors and volunteers from our visiting and companion services.
Can you share examples of success stories where your services have positively impacted the lives of seniors?
Through numerous feedback, we have already repeatedly learned that the commitment of our volunteers has a positive impact on the life situation of older people.
What role does technology play in your services? How do you use modern tools, emergency call systems, and platforms to facilitate communication and organization?
Modern technologies are only used for necessary documentation and organization. For us, the word is central.
How do you promote cooperation between companions and the family members of seniors?
Our volunteers coordinate individually with family members.
What steps do you take to ensure the privacy and well-being of older people are always maintained?
We instruct our volunteers on this at the beginning of their activity and make targeted spot checks.
How do you plan to address the growing demand for senior companion services in the future?
This voluntary work is still manageable in our city. With higher case numbers, one would have to consider a full-time position.
What advice would you give to family members who are considering using senior companion services for their loved ones?
Don't hesitate to pick up the phone. Sometimes there are more solutions than you think.
How do you see the role of senior companion services in promoting independence, social integration, and joy of life in old age?
This is a very important task for all senior companion services. However, the focus must be different in each individual case.
Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our readers about your senior companion service?
Be brave and set up a visiting and companion service in your city/municipality. The many positive feedbacks will compensate you for your efforts!
Thank you for the interview.

Senior companion services and technology
With the advancement of technology, senior companion services have also evolved. Digital platforms and apps enable more efficient coordination of services, scheduling appointments, and facilitating communication between older people, their families, and companions. This is particularly important as many older people today are familiar with technological devices and can use these technologies to maintain their independence.
Often, emergency call systems are also explained to seniors and provided to them, and senior companion services or volunteer helpers are stored as emergency contacts.
The Future of Senior Companion Services
Given the continuously growing older population, the demand for senior companion services is expected to continue to rise. It is anticipated that providers in this area will increasingly focus on personalized offers tailored to the individual needs and preferences of older people.
Conclusion
Senior companion services play an important role in today's elder care, giving seniors the opportunity to stay in their familiar surroundings while receiving the support they need. These services not only promote the independence and quality of life of older people but also provide social interaction to prevent loneliness and emotional support. With the change in elder care, senior companion services are becoming an increasingly important resource for older people and their families.
Senior companion services not only contribute to the individual support of older people but also have positive effects on society in general. The aging population represents a growing demographic challenge, and the availability of high-quality senior companion services can help to meet this challenge.
By relieving family members, who often bear the main responsibility for caring for older people, senior companion services enable these families to better balance their professional and personal obligations. This leads to a better quality of life for both older people and their families.
