The most common triggers for back pain include muscle tension due to poor posture/stress and lack of exercise. Other causes of back pain are diseases, wear and tear, and functional disorders of the spine, as well as organic, autoimmune, or hormonal reasons.

A healthy back is the basis for a good quality of life, regardless of age. But especially in old age, back problems can lead to significant impairment. Back pain is one of the most common complaints in old age and can have various causes, including degenerative changes in the spine, signs of wear and tear, muscular weakness, or incorrect movement patterns. But there are ways to prevent this and to maintain or improve back health. Targeted senior back training and regular back exercises can play an important role in this.

Kristina (Team Gardia): "Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you do what you do exactly?"

Dominik Barkow: "First of all, thank you for having me here. My name is Dominik Barkow. I am a holistic health coach. I entered this profession myself because of a personal history of suffering. I used to do something completely different, studied business administration, and then had over 10 years of pain in various areas, from neck pain to shoulder pain, foot pain, had mild depression, dizziness, digestive problems, etc., and unfortunately could not work it out with the existing healthcare system and then took it into my own hands..."

-> You can find out how Dominik took the realization of being a health coach into his own hands in a video on our YouTube channel. Here you can find the full-length interview. We also delve into the questions of whether a back school is important for seniors, what challenges and needs older people have regarding their back health, and provide exercises and tips for daily routines and the prevention of back pain.

Why back exercises are so important in old age

With increasing age, flexibility and muscle strength decrease, which can lead to an increased susceptibility to back problems. However, this does not mean that one has to accept back pain. On the contrary: targeted back exercises can strengthen muscles, improve mobility, and thus prevent back pain. In addition, existing complaints can be alleviated, and the quality of life can be significantly increased.

The importance of a senior back school

A senior back school offers a structured and professional way to counteract back problems. In such courses, exercises specifically tailored to the needs of older people are taught, which promote both stability and mobility of the back. Special attention is paid to gentle execution to avoid overstraining and prevent injuries. A senior back school also offers the advantage of training in a group under expert guidance, which not only motivates but also promotes social interaction.

The health of older people is important to us. In addition to the Gardia emergency bracelet, which we developed ourselves in Germany, we also provide regular content for seniors and their relatives.

Effective back exercises for seniors

Now let's take a look at some effective back exercises that are particularly suitable for seniors:

1. Cat-Cow Movement:

This yoga exercise promotes spine mobility and strengthens back muscles. Start in a tabletop position and alternate between a rounded cat pose (arch your back up) and a hollow cow pose (let your back sag down). Perform the movement slowly and controlled, making sure to synchronize your breath with the movements.

2. Bridge:

The bridge exercise strengthens the gluteal muscles and the muscles along the spine. Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Now slowly lift your pelvis until your body forms a straight line, then lower it again. Make sure to tighten your abdominal muscles and perform the movement in a controlled manner.

3. Side Bend:

This exercise stretches the lateral torso muscles and improves the lateral mobility of the spine. Stand upright and extend one arm overhead to the side. Slowly bend to the opposite side until you feel a stretch along your side. Hold the position for a few breaths and then return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise on the other side.More exercises

Conclusion:

Back exercises and a senior back school can make a decisive contribution to maintaining back health in old age. Regular training can prevent complaints, improve mobility, and increase quality of life. It is never too late to start targeted back exercises and actively do something for your back health. So start today and give your back the attention it deserves!
